Abstract

Positivism and Antipositivism in Argentina:Positivism in Argentina was once a dominant influence on the thought of many intellectuals and, through them, on the very cultural formation of the country. This makes the approach of this book particularly interesting, as it subjects the currents of positivism and anti-positivism to a serious critical examination. By identifying the role played by both trends within Argentine thought, and furthermore by clarifying their influence, this book points out the derivations of positivism and anti-positivism not only in culture, but also in the local historical process. Its author, Berta Perelstein, was a pedagogue and communist intellectual whose contributions go beyond educational thought and reflection and extend into the great cultural debates, such as the one she proposes in this pioneer work, only now re-edited.

Abstract

In order for the process of knowledge to confront its object in the integrity of its concrete determination, it is necessary to start from the simplest form of the object in question, and to reproduce it with thought by virtually accompanying it in the unfolding of its determinations, however that these appear to be the opposite of that simpler content of theirs. Such is the course that this research follows in order to answer about the specific national form with which Argentine society acts as a subject in the process of development of the productive forces of work. This research does not consist of the historical unfolding of the course followed by Argentine society throughout the period considered, as a process whose unity is given simply by dealing with the same national scope. On the contrary, its course has as its axis the evidence of the features that this historical development presents as expressions of the existence of a specific determination of the form that the Argentine national process of capital accumulation takes.

Abstract

This book is an enthralling account of the role played by the destroyer ARA Bouchard in the Falklands/Malvinas War. Over forty years after its construction, with obsolete technology, scarce maintenance and many out-of-service machineries, it was still present during the whole campaign with a prominent role that, for several reasons, remained hidden until today. During the Falklands/Malvinas conflict, it patrolled the north of the archipelago to allow the recapture of the islands. It was noteworthy together with the Cruiser and another destroyer in the attack on the British fleet, without being able to find it. On its return, it was hit by the third torpedo launched by the submarine Conqueror aimed at the cruiser ARA General Belgrano. It suffered damage and, although it could still sail, was forced to dry dock to change a part of its hull. For two consecutive nights, it stopped British commandos from making an incursion into the Río Grande airport, in order to destroy the Navies Super Etendard attack aircraft and assassinate its pilots. With its main gun battery, it fired with combat ammunition on enemy targets and was the only main battery to have the opportunity to do so. It was irradiated and used for missile target practice; they were unable to sink it during the firing practice. Later, it was decommissioned and scrapped.

Abstract

Pastoral Aborigen is a type of ecclesiastical indigenism with Christian roots and an ecumenical sense that, unlike other indigenist missions, did not seek to convert the indigenous people to Christianity, but rather to promote their development and contribute to their liberation. These missions were part of the conciliar renewal and were stressed between developmentalist precepts and leftist ideologies of the time.

Abstract

Emerging Territorialities in the peri-urban area of La Plata. This book compiles articles focused on the different emerging territorialities shaped by the primary activities of agricultural production in the peri-urban area of La Plata district. This territory is a space affected by economic logics permeated by a series of particular practices and social relations that have been established by social agents over time. Taking into account the forms of production and the activities derived from them in the peri-urban area, the chapters discuss the production of cut flowers; horticultural production mostly in greenhouses; life in the communities of Italian, Portuguese, Japanese and Bolivian migrants who have territorialized the area creating spatial mediations in order to take root in the place; and, in turn, all the problems derived from certain dynamics linked to the activities generated by a mostly migrant population that has settled for years on the periphery of the city.

Abstract

As the second volume of the collection Violence, security and social issues, this book presents a series of recent ethnographic studies on the prison establishments of the Prison Service of the Province of Buenos Aires (Servicio Penitenciario Bonaerense, SPB). In line with the initial proposal of this first series of the collection, this set of articles have their origin in the most prominent final papers for the Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the National University of La Plata (Universidad Nacional de La Plata, UNLP), which have been discussed within the framework of the Center for Security Studies in the Province of Buenos Aires (Núcleo de Estudios sobre Seguridad en la provincia de Buenos Aires, NESBA), a group formed around the sustained participation in various research projects at the School of Humanities and Education Sciences in UNLP. These studies share an interest in analyzing the social relations developed inside prison establishments, as well as those that connect the inhabitants of these institutions with other actors and spaces of the rest of society.

Abstract

With a marked revolutionary and workerist phraseology with libertarian overtones, the first revolutionary unionists in Argentina came from within the Socialist Party led by Juan B. Justo, within which they had challenged their growing electoral and parliamentary orientation, under the influence of the new ideas that they were beginning to gain ground in the French and Italian labor movement. At the beginning of the 20th century, intense social struggles in Argentina catalyzed this process of political differentiation, in the context of the first general strikes and direct confrontations with the state and the ruling class. During the following years, revolutionary syndicalism unfolded as a dynamic and ductile current within a recently formed, heterogeneous and highly ethnically fragmented labor movement. The book that we present here continues and advances on the investigations carried out in the last period, providing a set of original works that examine little-reported aspects of the Creole revolutionary syndicalist current during the period prior to the first government of Hipólito Yrigoyen (1916-1922), the mandate itself and the subsequent moment, already under the presidency of Marcelo T. de Alvear (1922-1928). Starting from a careful study of primary sources, the chapters investigate aspects such as: the syndicalist political formation prior to 1916; militancy and organization in the wood industry; the activation of revolutionary unionism among rural workers; the link between trade unionism and the world of women's work; the positions and struggles within the current around the state project of legal status for unions.

Abstract

As the moment of the birth of the patria, Independence enjoys a privileged role in the historical imaginary of many Latin American nations. In Argentina as in other countries, the period has been fundamental to state discourses of nation-building and identity, lending its figures and central narratives a powerful symbolic function. It has also attracted significant literary attention, and this book offers an innovative reading of texts that provide irreverent, metafictional, or self-reflexive retellings of this foundational moment. This type of fiction is usually read through well-established frameworks on the contemporary Latin American historical novel that emphasise its destabilising of knowledge and single truths. Instead, this work foregrounds the much more immediate, concrete political points at stake when we read these texts through both their direct engagement with contemporary circumstances and the politics of the history they evoke. It therefore argues for a new approach to reading contemporary Latin American historical fiction that showcases its response to politically urgent questions.
